Metar

How to read METAR Graphics:

By displaying METAR reports in graphical form, EchoMap enables you to interpret reported weather at dozens of airports quickly.  The color of the vertical bar indicates the condition of the ceiling at that particular airport:

  • Green indicates VFR
  • Yellow indicates MVFR
  • Red indicates IFR
  • Magenta indicates LIFR.

Likewise, the horizontal color bar shows the same information for visibility.

Because different airports report the weather at different times you can find the age of the weather by checking the color of the airport identifier.  To read METAR age: green indicates 0-30 minutes old, yellow 31-60 minutes, and red indicates more than 60 minutes. As the report ages the identifier color changes.

Precipitation information is also displayed with an S to indicate snow and R for rain. These letters are color coded to indicate the intensity of the precipitation, with Green (light), Yellow (moderate) and Red (heavy).  METAR reports are also available in text form on the information page.
